I have a lot of automation, but every once and a while there is something that makes me say to myself, "Damn, that is really handy". It often seems that they are the very simple ideas and implementations. We don't have a fenced in yard. We let the dogs out to do their business and just call them back in afterwards. If you let them back in within a short period of time, no problem. However, let them out for a while and they will tend to wander. Every once in a while, one of us will get distracted and forget. I just installed some of the Kwikset z-wave locks and was thinking of what automation to implement. Besides the obvious, I decided to set a timed reminder after the door unlocks that asks, "Did you remember to let the dogs back in?" Now, they never get forgotten. Very simple, but nice. Don't know why I didn't think to do this years ago. Don't need the lock, can just ds10a too.
